I got a little carried away with Halloween this year. Not only did I make Laura a costume, but I also made her a little Halloween outfit. I splurged on the peacock costume and spent around $20. Unfortunantly, there is no cheap substitute for feathers so I had to do it. And as much as I don't like spending money, I felt like this costume was so worth it. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhshXGH3yt6tNhyjwrnR34p0zt4jzTUGicK5DK1S1vIHwKpNqdLGi-NcOqwMj9byOTSapW3yQ_tnxfBbkkLGi7HE93LGMbwgdGbb52IVL-p-QfKntzgjGSjYNbCvMnjUGYZyd_3s6jxfZKj/s400/halloween+night1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669848658592589474" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEGp7-UVPWBDHATykIR1PMfTRze4lrnMBMNsxuBJ6L8IWNk0rOnlKeCHPtt2gwkFp3OgcicgVnNi2oN7xRDD2jc-XfmzJSTOJfywCHjJkb5E7jZRNRt8872KDry5yO7TZSxznGWgSkKPUg/s400/peacock9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669848635897383858" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdnk3AkJ-lKIEkENKR1KI7t8ArUcRtPU8ggEcKQzR5Ni-ORaezga9MTWJgRFwDj1tSerLviRB2NmniroCNpjE-MbuU_0UjhdTJEaHyokfuW2ysCJXkd9BgxqljoYSQqnQ8rukp7i3ogsmi/s400/peacock5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669848630767552242" />

Laura went trick or treating with her friend tonight. I'm sure it is a lot of work, but it's got to be all worth it when you get to make two adorable coordinating costumes.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp9yssl0czj433I68-GrMYP-afglBz3h8y81INCmDCs6o7EbESPPI2FwKWJw2_WTaAnWSbmm-tplyomDC0uGIy8RTbxgLXJmVd-KfOGNyHcuvwOsSDuz-b9H51NYrKLVmOaEFb-Qhe-7mI/s400/halloween+night+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669848613924319890" />

Her halloween shirt and skirt were made from an old knit skirt that I don't wear anymore, an old black sheet that we no longer use, and some scraps of white and black polka dot. Laura is a 3T in length and 12-18 months in width. When I buy pants they are either too short, or she can't keep them up because they keep falling off her hips. So, I decided to make her some skinny jeans that fit. Laura loves them because they are stretchy and comfortable like leggings, and I love them because they are CHEAP and adorable.

The best part about these pants is that they are 1) super cheap (did I already say that?) and 2) super fast. You can make a pair in about an hour, which in my house translates to 2.5 episodes of Dora.

My friend asked me how I made them so I decided to put together a small tutorial on the process. I think you will be amazed at how fast and easy they are! All you need is a pair of pants that you will be cutting up to make your skinny jeans and an old pair of leggings that you can cut up to use as a pattern. I cut up a pair that had holes in the knee and have used the pattern multiple times for lots of different projects. (pajama bottoms, leggings, skinny jeans, etc)

Instructions:
1. Find an old pair of jeans or pants that you can cut up and shrink down to your little one's size. In selecting your pants, pull on the fabric of the pants and see if the fabric stretches. Remember these are going to fit like leggings so there needs to be a little bit of give. It does not need to be as stretchy as jersey knit, it just needs to have some give to it. For the first pair I made, I used an old pair of skinny jeans that were a little too skinny for me. The second pair I made was from a pair of corduroy pants I bought for $2 at a thrift store.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4mCFtqDE9XIKaebjETJgXBw9-KxtQfXLfuLsv-eE7qn9o5Xolqf0-Px5SLBfcFVJE9XAwjbcqy_9JW9KyO8I5hNUaa_ZX61OPgnV-ZYZM7QUaIt832ZI2MtfpzJhfJjzYQa-w0BGpAlwk/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668400025894379074" />

2. Pin your pattern piece on top being careful to keep the middle seam right in the middle of the pattern. You want to place the pattern so that the bottom hem of the old pants will be the bottom hem of the new pants we are sewing. Remember, this pattern in only a guide. I always add extra length so they will go all the way to her ankle and I also add an inch or two on top. You can always cut this off later if it is too much. Also, give yourself a 1/4 - 1/2 inch seam allowance around the edge of the pattern as you cut it out.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh14NPArblaMUZf_-geKM38iB1fqZRz1GLGajVdukUN5huavGoM8iPQPzE6D7lEt4gas4qXMSgYuLMsyhaDiItsIoXZvLMfSQUE8Ska3pVsmHBX20fJI92_sCUDANBSbt4Yd6XBbtvuS5Pe/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668400003127409890" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3iQFyzaag7iehED1AeoFujznfLbUcNFdoomXgtazhndzndCoAfwPSLFk77m8t5A-Ei6wDPAcqY69DgIwE7dyJVrxlCXnMHRdaznpiijiWumy6b3iraeXfEwcWg05TH9b2-cvWzUenEBUB/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+020.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668400005401319874" />

4. You can keep this simple and just sew a casing around the waist,thread in your elastic and call it good. Or you can make things a little more difficult like I did. I wanted the finished pair to have a flat front and I wanted to take advantage of the belt loops and button on the original jeans. Here's what I did:

7. Cut the waist band off the old pants. Cut above the seam so that the waist bad pieces can fold open. If there are belt loops cut around them since you will be using them on your new pants.

8. Cut two pieces from the waist band that are the same size as the front and back of the pants plus 1/2 inch for seam allowance. Center these two pieces so that you will have the button in the middle front and the back belt loop in the middle back.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmXWOy54ziZw8mFHjQWg1jCIpYIh1BxvqdQFEb_4mt_GuxijMQ1E-5gLaulgkICwBDKPa7o5XMOuhVT7Ku8IAt5mkrKcsgn_wOJIjNc-dnu9r5sLNWHX56D4-zLRBo_n6mJ6cpuAO86cUO/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668406096127926610" />

9. Cut a piece of elastic a couple of inches shorter than the length of the back waist band piece and place it inside back waist band. Sew each end of the elastic to the end of the waist band piece. Sew the front waist band piece to the back waist band piece making sure to sew to catch the elastic in your seams.

10. Sew the waist band piece on to the pants, making sure to line up the side seams. The front piece should sew on fairly easily. The back piece will be a little trickier because of the elastic that causes the fabric to bunch up. Just go slowly, smoothing down the fabric as you go.

You should end up with a flat front pair of skinny jeans.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZWaE0fhN-Vbwj5hOZwFedyIahQ5BxVwZDUXDVeZ-nNXvsLbDiZHeQCghzpN9tsh75wCgfkZmDnHeB72xiwm92dh8XTa9fZ9UhScLl9fhDjh2A7USdvZijb0clsz-s88_iV2yNVGMiPhtO/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+030.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668406090555176114" />

Now go turn off Dora and take your child to the park to show off her new pair of pants.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuN9qJZ3i2WQIlvc_3vN8PR8ZrnAXHL2IpiSZRhwoFIAFUAqr6YlOJpl4NJSJ50jxg624LBKu4Z8MNb6xMlhkTWf7zROKSEr8IThFfq4ltv8shk0x2w8q8XQL_zDHeLKeO5RQm1nLWhwSm/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668414538055946994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilbhINA9PWRP303TD84Jo9SOLtw6uOeCrK-IMunS40cW9wNN9IVOqdeQXBClaIf8Bt5mmbC0MSlS4WSnKSppnW9i7snZr71rKrz3Y0CBWird_-vU2WodDyCd881Ez8e-QcESHOQpuaC9lE/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+033.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668408876160842898" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwl1hfnFNbP-vZa2u8rvOKgfguHL8WL-ucRooOptTtxC769DnTP1-Q75m3XSgL4GEiVz86fDqiW62PvNhblBESkBupy1Af4GPzY7K7YyXPBQIrxD-eThSbwZz6PV09OZCNIXw6-OINdu8b/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668408874755906818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEXEuwsKEC3UZk3zIEBDM62iz2e83aOOJkrEUT2FFAx_OJP-9ywiHgEWmlda4Crc0r5PavpZWIJZGibTy0XS_8jM18CAFSqAc5vVxp0rq8qTRqv975fpbYXfVGybpD0QPTWIxVL1URWDaZ/s400/skinny+jeans+tute+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668408875337572850" />Candicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13681240763990669746noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8784780877937803164.post-2958964059458438872011-10-05T13:01:00.000-07:002011-10-05T13:16:55.589-07:00More ClothesI've been doing lots more sewing for Laura lately. My goal is to see how much of Laura's fall wardrobe I can refashion from my pile of unwanted clothes and how little I have to spend on new clothes. There are some things you can't sew: shoes, cardigans, socks. etc. But I have managed to make things that I didn't think I could like a coat and matching hat from one of my old dresses. I will have to post a picture of that another day. But for today, here are pics of a cute little shirt downsized from one of mine. I shrunk it down and replaced the buttons with some more colorful ones.

<img style="display:block; Is it just Laura or are all 2 year olds obsessed with dinosaurs and monsters? She runs around the house all day roaring and yelling, "I gonna eat you momma." Maybe I have let her watch one too many episodes of Dinosaur Train on PBS kids. The shirt didn't turn out as well as planned but the leggings turned out perfect. And my pile of unwanted clothes is now 2 T-shirts smaller.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb1g0aLUpCrrsMei8tnMbohyJsqvuBerqzzFZXas61N9ThOOUIuSw9zysxqnFQYXbl7tLlnnDjqiDI_h9lkW0Vg8gDpeXgTLib_55sNv_tJyqaJlMaQFxPfYXCi4mwYebW65qnQ2xcVQYV/s400/011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653894186591309778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZwvZVKsTCyJCxzynmvMtyGybjaQvZMlSInzXvXl4LeQEfNv-0kv9N3eq_KR1uD6bKXjR4KD2vrTzVZan9DVAZ_yf4aqE5qINwBO83_mAQPLSm0DKYnF4A3M1B7Zop6Fc5FoKj18BPK2hK/s400/014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653894187013355474" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoimIb1T9vz94RV54i6xoTxuksS6mWUIKrVyvmVhXDTac9_-nR33IKrDVrCzAvS5jn3gpWmrF6TbnEXfmIE672gklWkCDbISPv-bj5Kc84d4usNERA0Gp7VBTch5kQUumLAUZlMRwKyS6E/s400/007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653894179970069138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDrdWBV1U4rlBe1UCR5j2dB2osz6kge47zxopp4yh3bLQDwp3MGM4PMrA2V-pEamsTyGkvSVuGUV3oekbqslnAUaDqauVbDkJYfuHnhK-3dygYmQNEdlpYYstE5mcDJUPwi5S3DJ_PYy2X/s400/008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653894177972221314" />Candicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13681240763990669746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8784780877937803164.post-43303148014146899052011-09-05T14:42:00.000-07:002011-09-05T14:54:36.137-07:00More Sewing for LauraI am still working my way through a gigantic pile of clothes that we don't wear anymore. And with each item I remove from the pile, Laura gets a new item added to her closet. Here are the latest clothing redo's.

Bustle Skirt and Tie Top
I made the top out of Peter's old dress shirt that got a big hole in the elbow. And the skirt I made out of a Bridesmaid's dress I wore a few years ago when I was pregnant with Laura. I used the lining inside the dress for the ruffles.
Hoodie
This came from one of Peter's old hoodies that has never fit him very well. I think it fits Laura much cuter.

They are her favorite. She is constantly asking to wear her "giraffe" and "kitty cat" jammies. So, when I saw this old tank top sitting in my bin of clothes to be recycled, I decided it would be perfect for some zebra jammies.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOT1s0J7PZEwdU0Fx5YOYlKIqMMmLCHujhzulZQ_fIaitecAWWaOSysEDii9ppb3aB6WkMupYuhqQK7qYFIcjq2ZOSOqm00HJZScS9tHPvQT5c6_OVWsqldj2siBdve0l5sQzjBzE9r8O2/s400/zebra+jammies+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5644624543203293266" />

I cut up a pair of Laura's leggings that had holes in them and used them for a pattern for the pants. I used some pink knit from an ugly dress also in the "to be recycled" bin, to make a shirt.

I decided when I came home from New Hampshire that I hated my bedroom and that I've always hated it ever since we moved here. I was trying to decide why it was so ugly. I figured out it was the bed spread. We have this velvety red/maroon blanket that we bought at Costco when we first got married. We paid almost $100 bucks for it. I don't know what I was thinking. But that was before I had a sewing machine. I thought you had to spend that kind of money for a bed spread. Well, at least I could've bought a cute one. This one was something you would expect to see at your Grandmother's house. Good quality, but lacking all cuteness whatsoever. So, I decided to change that. I looked at Anthropology for ideas and found two bed spreads that I loved. The one that I absolutely adored had fabric flowers sewn all over it. I knew I couldn't hope to recreate it with out it looking like a cheap craft project gone wrong. So I decided to try to copy the other one. I love how it turned out.

Here's how I did it: I bought four sheets at an estate sale. (Yes, they are used sheets, and if that grosses you out then I'm sorry. I did wash them! If I had to buy new sheets I couldn't have afforded to make it.) I sewed 2 sheets together lengthwise. I drew horizontal lines every nine inches with a disappearing ink pen. Then I just gathered the fabric as I sewed. When I had all the gathering complete (And I wanted to rip out all my hair at this point) I sewed over the gathered seams with some bias tape that I found at a yard sale several months back. Then I cut the remaining sheet to fit the size of the duvet that I had and sewed the gathered cover to this sheet right sides together, leaving an opening to turn it right side out and slide in the duvet cover. I finished by sewing 2 pillow shams with the same gathering technique and then 2 throw pillows with some lace that I also found at a garage sale.

Super easy! And I am not the only one who is enjoying my big, fluffy, new cloud.

Unfortunately they live on the other side of the country and we don't get to see them very often. When we saw them last May, I kept thinking how much fun it would be to have twins and make matching clothing and accessories. So, for their birthday I made them some matching backpacks using a pattern I found here: http://indietutes.blogspot.com/2009/10/toddler-backpack-pattern.html
I used this pattern to make a packpack for Laura for her 2nd birthday. She loves it. She loves to put her snacks and stuffed animals in it so she can take them with her wherever we go. Now she keeps talking about her cousins, Zoie and Eliza, and their backpacks.

I lived less than an hour away from my sister, her five kids, and her big house that she just moved in to. I don't know what was more fun: spending time with my sister or decorating her house. (She is pregnant with #6 and is under doctor's orders to be off her feet most of the day. Unfortunantly for her, and fortunantly for me, that means that she needed someone to help with home decor projects in their beautiful new home.)

This was one of my favorite things we did:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuHahBHN_mvHDbJWrZ9oIcXkfI1-Q7eW_yu-AIus3wLw1AvTD3l-H32w3zXUhrrdGQTAcVbmhmBbPjhqXzgCS3Pdhh75HW_vuHPk9FnN8_fcvtJalSYDGFXEE2_HpOUC4Tj7w0zpwaNpCm/s400/August+15+129.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641550845075990674" />
I got the idea from this blog: http://thelovelylittlethings.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.htm.
I drew the trees with a pencil on the wall and then filled it in with white paint. I think it turned out so cute. I want to do some in Laura's room. Do you think my landlord would appreciate some free tree artwork in his home?
We painted this bench yellow and made some pillows for it that matched the quilt that we made for their bed.

I found a tutorial (http://homemadebyjill.blogspot.com/2010/03/refashioned-jeans-to-maternity-skirt.html)for making jeans into a maternity skirt. I used a pair of jeans that I found at a thrift store for $ and an old T-shirt. The project was simple, fast and turned out so well. The next day I made a pair of maternity pants out of an old pair I had sitting around. I don't think I will ever buy maternity pants/skirts again. It is so much cheaper to make them, and they fit better. Sorry, the pics are horrible. Peter is the worst photographer in the world, I think. I tried to take these myself which is almost as bad as having Peter take them. You get the idea though.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl2sCqizxRxl08MmbEUXkQDDJdM0UIb5XvKFDZD_Fu3pbd2Gcdl4dO3Ln7AJSDG6OZmeQeU1SvihGhFyvAVqR1N4Qs4g5oKUZlZo8efoOTnE-qv-wgou7847xKEZGuiYU96nORXEb509uP/s400/sewing+009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600997679446296610" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Dx6Mn3JOQkdjbuxVOW0-U6aKHtTjhsIL4TFvIy0aMT90cEiblEJ7eS0gT2r8RtLmba11LjTgDq0q6tk4_ZBg0W9oO3w8tIo8E8ltQom6E3ToGiX9OJkdwAi7JfHvxZD6bsmXWvvDO3Jx/s400/sewing+017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600997674745931634" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7LKtFW4hhcC2q_o1RN0MALagYG9owAa0B8WYXfuk4GAYWNazEcLjo03f0H6gJE5FgFs9uWLJeGE-v8nYubKGV0g5YUxAhGkXDrHibOYUJYeV97PBrPztR3IqrutFv_asCRL7ahWORpO02/s400/sewing+007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600997670686551954" />

And here is a picture of the cute little aprons and chef hats I made for Laura's birthday party. My favorite is the one little boy's apron who got a jean pocket to make it more manly.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiUlBFlH9gfWgbOKm9GPsHT_5fG5r7PbNLclATC_1uGEUhsLUa-Cw1dH2_BGAiKb5qdH7A7ZGdCSEQBRRpsfrVahVeK0Jha1JE3P5hg-toyWx4c6unPSGf2-lsaMCyz6Ev45twWizNgZOa/s400/sewing+083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600999386406622770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx8renspuBmNQJm17mhvdkiK755E2zBpfcYxkqPrjNKS80tlUNpAA-en6sXgt672bz9XTjUCheSPyywBcZjkViJie6-8O1tq95swCsLZUkE9C-F-fgNdThRDd0iJ7lnqj_5Fcmsbb4pXhf/s400/sewing+085.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600999381632858050" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga9IbSNe5W-8VBI6_QQIEh3S-lsA0Jqe5uam5K_BUNKxys7uB7qXNqeKc1w5_uXHGjsmjsbTGToQpQ1evzADhF9m2dKzfhu0ryxcDJrOTt0uQryY6tVvulmP38ApIRcNNs2XuiBtJakIwj/s400/sewing+069.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600999376228365602" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqzOXkMdNQwBAqp3wD4OqzOX76NQmPuA5sVzRIoBxTHdLsxTnVv6CKvkE47b73_cZqc8lc5jVs0RaI0qP9Qx8is1AbOc4aX-c7wW10NKe6OhHVmzw8MWlZZE6VFU04WeXvfs2OXDWl7-Vn/s400/sewing+084.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600999369686172050" />Candicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13681240763990669746noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8784780877937803164.post-77328166963598158402010-09-23T11:05:00.001-07:002010-09-23T11:32:47.945-07:00Halloween DecorationsI love Halloween for two main reasons: 1. little children in costumes are adorable and 2. Halloween means Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. So, it always makes me happy when I get to put up a few Halloween decorations becauseit reminds me that in a few quick months I will be decorating for Christmas and setting up my Christmas tree, which is my favorite time of the year.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmcjSXmb4MJOrizGIbtd8GbZn-Ml65J_gQQFBgYkhdX2QTDDDno5QIIlmjvm9B9dXMLr0aVLSoENnI-6SR7Jm5WGmhb1yeap05z-d_KvV0bKE91cLFZ3BPWek6Q0lErPnxgDrG8Gz5TfWz/s400/crafts+047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520172857014200082" />
A couple of years ago, my mother-in-law gave me this cute dish towel with the haunted house on it. It was too cute to use as a dish towel so I spray painted (I love Wal-Mart $1 spray paint!) a frame I found at a yard sale for a $1 and put my dishtowel in it for a spooky Halloween picture.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHtxSe5EPe3dlZVhE9BklTGCLX9_3NLmjZ6tEp5vGZ18507usoY5LLhyamqEjqcNOHNTRa1oXRJGi2N46EAscbtIGsnTxNWGvC_WKOF6bkPTXIIILoB4SjGWtB72hIPgMAd0mmegvDWi_H/s400/crafts+050.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520172844910844354" />
I love my candy jars! They cost me $1 to make. I bought these glass jars and glass candlestick holders at a yard sale for 25 cents a piece. Then I glued the jar to the holder and filled them up with candy. The expensive part is keeping them filled with candy. In spite of my strict instructions that they are only a decoration, my husband is really enjoying having candy in our house, which is unusual for us. I thought candy corn was just a decoration. I didn't know people really liked to eat that nasty stuff.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOF9c5JyzqIRY0nDTJIl9dYGbvwEPi6ZjWoZtTSDMPj7ktdZn1pNcR2n1BmsNAaNOnNSiyr6pV6P3inX6F5cgfBgzWwPBQu-eVwSx5lOlAcr_eBeJXdU3Fo-0IEdZD_FD9l6o-idZKeOKT/s400/crafts+045.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520172840146389154" />
Laura and I found this stick on a walk this morning and I thought it would make a good haunted tree. I spray painted it black and stuck it in a formula can that I modgepodged some fabric on. I found these little skulls at the dollar store and glued some string to them and hung them on the tree. I'm not quite sure how long this decoration is going to last because Laura keeps trying to pull the ornaments off the tree.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9WMUKVoFeCAx5lxYEBXahhJBwN5biuOeh_QPdlV437hU3GAVrwpTrYBAZL1XtdV5z0KiD6cbRZA06c8USahBSmJuG0A8XXPuiD1Xk2czZ3MHzk_eScZ9b2UpHnHw2JxYasO2zkmvQA8H/s400/crafts+046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520172836452436194" />

I bought a huge box of fake flowers at a yard sale for $2. Mixed up with all the flowers were some red and white poinsetta flowers. There is probably nothing I hate more than cheap, fake poinsetta flowers. I've just seen too many people stick them in their outside flower pots during Christmas and then leave them there until March. Hideous! So, I spray painted them black, covered some buttons with orange fabric and made a Halloween wreath for my door. I had to add a few orange flowers so that the black flowers would stand out against the dark wreath.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKybOkCZ-cUqgZBuVj0vqHMHgglggwbuLCteqI1nSREyzD2a5do2GDSiHbvsKb2oUMh3z6XHNdF573VZc6n2AeG0eL5nEW932ti-XMX89433QIB410KSxSsY2VdvqRE8l4SFkVIXcexlwU/s400/crafts+037.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520172831878177298" />

Happy Halloween!Candicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13681240763990669746noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8784780877937803164.post-62905474868052203322010-09-09T10:25:00.000-07:002010-09-09T10:47:49.870-07:00This and ThatI had book club at my house last week and we discussed "The Great Divorce." The book is awesome and I give it 5 stars. It is a very inspiring book that tells the story of a man who finds himself in Hell and learns what he must do to make it to Heaven. I tried to make our refreshments match the theme. i don't have any serving trays so I spent a few dollars at Goodwill buying candlestick holders and plates. Then I spray painted the candlestick holders and glued them to the bottom of plates to create some fun serving platters.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbKk-7IJDpAXplN5aq_mMueTA-qi0PZ_RGEX6Mfk8lQwRkKrUr9u8_G0EPNEDaBtSI7DsCWGmrUiar_z0iirlL6OafWSIEDjC3tmmtTYZaT9yObKM-3XgQufb_spJQJobv1FLG82L8wAkI/s400/IMG_0781.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514968538578148402" />

I made this apron for myself a while ago out of an old pillowcase I bought at an estate sale for a quarter. Here are some of her new clothes:

Bonnet: I think bonnets on babies are the cutest thing ever. My baby disagrees and tries to pull it off whenever she remembers it is there.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijfevkjc1Kq7Ao4QHKCRjdnY1o1cMOd_yMOM4JIydSSYjmHYQFqEgCSLQAcyZh7icGaoNZUjar4DyA62QNKIsgs-pDLp8N1RFrTIGYJ_NU0cGJQxPyBe_5t4sU4H45XuDn4GVLEKC178XK/s400/IMG_0009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441577649123468882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMEgyhkFv_TuCWlY1N13Qh79bf-7MG7VFWWbJV_JjGKpoNpTlGxZ0JYAtUfo-6JTITyZZfNsNnBdORMoRwyQ7oG-adj017PqBh83OEdlJI9fdkgoi3TgqcKF-IycIUjqb0W0uOuAH1ryfB/s400/IMG_0007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441577644980698258" />
Cost: practically free (I bought a huge bed skirt with lace all around the edge at Goodwill for $1 and used a small portion of it for this bonnet.)

Tuxedo dress: I made this a little while ago. I love Valentine's Day because it is such a fun excuse to decorate with pink. When I was looking online for some ideas of what to make, I saw a lot of small white christmas trees decorated with pink. I found this branch on a walk outside around our neighborhood and thought it might be a cute and cheap substitute. I spray painted it white and stitched conversation heart sayings on these super easy and fast heart pillows and hung them from the branches. I thought it was a great way to use the cute sayings with out having to eat the nasty candy. (I can't decide which tastes the most disgusting: conversation hearts or candy corn. Why can't all holidays have yummy candy like Easter does?)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivUoer5VNnPsdC7KEFopihVXjONtr_dO8_Zz64JDlLd5De8pLiOE0u4W7Yyz8_yOXPrQJ-rIbP9JsBMPd3eGMXHjhwyQ80ktOmYWyyMB-7ctTFo0p-AUg2P6J8YqKaectu1yH4ss5xBZjL/s400/P1100008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441280458996214082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAChf-N4vdh6NJdaPkHkDzZYMqdWqJ-2lJlG2762mdQOvjuVojwwcmcsxg2C-DY2d4Lof25FA_NW5JM3fOMoUsfQLPCmhvxXW4NljNfQ497a-e0vOTU_kKGySGAD94hIby_mhzP_q8viGB/s400/P1100012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441280450516900290" />

Cost: branch: free
spray paint: $1
colored fabric: $1
can: free (reused formula can covered in polka dot fabric)
(I used beans from my cupboard to fill the can and hold the branch up.)
Total Cost: $2

I made this little banner following a tutorial on rag letters. And I reused the stands my stuffed christmas trees were on with these burlap hearts. The flowers on the burlap hearts were originaly made for Laura's head, but unfortunantly her head is not growing as fast as my fabric flowers are. I keep making them bigger and bigger. I think I found the breaking point with this one. There is nothing better than sitting in your living room and enjoying the lights and smells from your Christmas tree. However, the few christmas decorations that we got last year in our little apartment didn't go very far in decorating our home. So, I had to be a little creative in coming up with some cheap, new decorations.

1. Our neighbors can see right through our back door windows and I have been wanting to do something to cover the windows. It seemed like a fairly inexpensive project because you use very little fabric and the $3 blinds from Target. But, now that I have put all the work into making them, I am very dissapointed. I don't think I like the fabric anymore. When I first brought it home, Peter said it looked like something from IKEA, and ever since then I can't help but think IKEA everytime I look at them. (Nothing against IKEA, its just too retro/modern for me) And the tutorial told me to use glue to glue the fabric to the blind. Doesn't work! It doesn't hold well and it is hard to create straight lines when you aren't ironing and sewing.

I hate when you put money and time into a project and then you don't like the end result. You can't just take it back.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiunLg2jS1tR2OrVFDBF7rTHGMibr21Jl1iseF3XYoGwAPa5R90aqTUTrbMB6wwIaN4yAC8-0FPiIvUK6_FqCDaAliIREzbwye8oQAn6uVoqGtEhyY8BnJ6Gqa-9mCCynEd7ihexyqtLQp0/s400/house+stuff+019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408640260367871586" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhygKWhcbeT3WF6JacpiFhVBOp3YJxSOO9UGaXkM1_sGhIXiQWWOpG6Qmug1vWqtJeOhlS5EJah0j6fqd1aVBU-KLRRmH0jnKQuX6D1obS5hQQYPfcccrVSIyB9qu1_Q9VrUXwCupu5I_He/s400/house+stuff+016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408640257990679218" />

Any suggestions on how I can improve them?Candicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13681240763990669746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8784780877937803164.post-57973416945411821042009-11-26T20:02:00.000-08:002009-11-26T20:43:10.535-08:00Kitchen MakeoverMy least favorite thing about my cute house is the long, skinny kitchen with the washer and dryer at the end. Not that I am complaining because I love having a washer and dryer and everyday I feel so lucky to have one in my house. And even though the kitchen is small, it is at least 4 times bigger than my previous apartment kitchen. But I figured it would be pretty cheap and easy to change the two things I disliked most: the old, dirty cupboards and this hideous, plaid curtain separting the kitchen from the washer and dryer.
Before:
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZGQnJWBkiK1WXW-rwBQMxvXw0X9UPG8wkyqFgICwZzlpw770Px8BH4agbXlrA_SIGHVNAKCmgn4I1bCP_op7gXSeb-fYe3sba20NTa_hFSTCjqW3hxNRQDNeSPpWvgWMRoUFCs96VhjHq/s400/house+stuff+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408631984177292834" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigNnrk8F-ynf-S33N26GwdhArE8mksxMjqOGVKL9AhF7fj7nTbbbgkXZUkbjldSKnQRM5I3Jn8yRVLtlEdSqIv7E1l-aUfn3o_GCpIvu9RCChM406Qlfh6Offf3qrP1zSA5UQf89YkIDRf/s400/house+stuff+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408631981885733394" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX7Bbcp9Guq1T7_O4NemnI-wnyacarXmPxmq1yCyz5DN-ZJAjkT93LxNsf1fQf_GofEmzJFrkEh8EKeskz5MWbGPp7JPyEy6ojNUilN5j6gQd9NjSu-bvwImjbDU4wt3G1HCpf0M8bf1zC/s400/house+stuff+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408631973800045106" />

After:

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl_1jTRPxl0NjrFB6WaD9U6VrNjYeKmTQxZSkAeKTJZQl5p24g2dH5Mai4FQBbyanSgSw-1eGOdk1I6p1ZKtOC42uqRIw8VdcIgj8aFQEdcaoQnjEpv5sqhjSfnJaDyYrpKyUp3DtoB46m/s400/house+stuff+007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408632599924124930" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9V10jmFE7nkmg-4bxW9F37qrl6ZM7A4NNRi3a91h3MJjxaE4W9vGWXzHpLf1ilKmMbaeFkDNrv4-_XsDKLe3Ce-L_Qkt4y6ianuuGGFMXftyM1FWNyHDeTIskSIyEyTENSeXrbUpn_d3e/s400/house+stuff+013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408632589135792226" />

It was a lot more work than I thought it would be. I liked how it added some more color to the drab tan walls. (If this were my house, I would paint her bedroom with a fun color) Next project for her bedroom: Curtains.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxpNVlVr1-5GcroVDwv79eDzyo6Nrfv0y-z7gjojNWEn4jDva1f8g8CIx9FWBLEV-NUnRzH8IxKavzyl-yvxR_kfULz4iJgFatxT2ysCA2gg-BxyCFKt0DxSPrjetB0iIS9bPCPVNlib5l/s400/projects+055.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402198779912472098" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6xFRJNNK3lCqaJyPlBUGt68eGaWIRcrN6vRPbAKOd8Zi55GZrlB2hKtsTnNg9OJMDMNPfDDQi_YuDwj8A5zjhR4VqePQD3ySeryzuardnQ-1i5iv5NSA_VjP3bSnV8F8K-DuYz3b5kepP/s400/projects+057.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402198772216888674" />

I found this idea on someone else's blog where they hung a branch in their little girl's room and sewed these fabric birds. I found one at Anthropology that was solid white ruffles. I added some colored fabric. This was one of my more expensive projects and I am still deciding whether I like the way it turned out. It was really hard to keep all of the ruffles in straight lines because the shower curtain that I used as the back was crooked so my measurements also turned out a little crooked.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbP6Ts3nSw3XlI0UrtJ34lMWFWzlammB3rp9mFnwiiDKoKWftz0WB210Pmh1FE-gzXVkwuwvfFZdZX_LB5ETkFO1CJ_p3pNDTaU4H0-wdbYRD89R40Q9vhn6SwGKpfdOJae4Lqx60MEkj9/s400/projects+045.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402191605446721778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGAdbm6zIK6LjBeLOqh7SZw-DLbE4PQlkP5YM5A6vVw94PjaXAgG4BBBD6UAmh3SHNpr5QHmPPTRO4N6Fw7ZCbveaJ8hMJJdfseC-wsd1rX4IRgMtDjj1Ulm-PDt6NnTtnBHUdPcWNU_aI/s400/projects+048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402191601600979362" />

And I found this cool frame that matches perfectly at Salvation Army.
